Dixie Boys even record at region

The Halifax County Dixie Boys all-stars evened their record at 1-1 in the East Region Tournament at Madison Heights on Saturday with a 10-0 win over Clarksville.

Halifax County, which lost its opener 5-3 to Bedford Metro on Friday, played Powhatan Sunday in an effort to stave off elimination in the tourney.

Halifax County 10 Clarksville 0

Halifax County scored two runs in the first, four in the second, three in the fifth and one in the sixth inning to beat Clarksville.

Jake Hughes singled and eventually stole home in the first inning, while R.J. Oliver doubled and scored on a Joey Davis single.

In the second, Chase Bomar doubled and scored on passed balls for a 3-0 lead.  Layne Shiflet walked, Ramel Hill hit an RBI double and stole third before scoring on a Shane Hatcher bunt.

Hatcher later stole third base and Hughes hit a sacrifice fly to score Hatcher.

Hughes doubled and Arthur Watts walked in the fourth without scoring, but Halifax County added three runs in the fifth on a Davis double, RBI single by Josh Brown, Bomar base hit, walk to Shiflet and two-run single by Hatcher.

Josh Brown drew a walk and scored on a triple by Boma in the sixth inning to end the game.

Oliver allowed no hits with 13 strikeouts and two walks in five innings for Halifax County on the mound, while Davis allowed one hit, while striking out two batters in the sixth inning.

Bedford Metro 5 Halifax County 3

The Halifax County Dixie Boys all-stars were held to five hits and dropped their first game 5-3 to Bedford Metro on Friday in the East Regional Tournament at Madison Heights.

Halifax County did not score through two innings while Bedford Metro scored twice in the second inning.

Bomar singled and advanced on a passed ball for Halifax County in the first inning, and Hughes walked and advanced to second base on a passed ball in the second.

Bedford Metro used walks and Halifax miscues to score twice in the second inning, and Halifax responded in the third with a double from Shiflet and RBI hit by Watts.

Bedford Metro scored two runs off an error and base hit in the third to lead 4-1, and Halifax County failed to score in the fourth inning despite a single by Davis.

Bedford Metro scored a run in the two hits in the fifth to lead 5-1, and Halifax County added two runs in the sixth inning.

Watts led off with a base hit, and pinch runner Hill stole second, advanced to third on an overthrow and scored to make it 5-2.  Will Miller walked and scored on a triple by Davis to make it 5-3, but that was as close as Halifax County would come, despite Bomar later reaching base after being hit by a pitch and getting as far as second base on a passed ball.

Halifax County used three pitchers in the game, Miller starting and going the first one and two-thirds innings, Hughes three innings and Oliver one and one-third innings, with the trio allowing a combined three hits while striking out nine batters and walking five.
