Dixie Majors tourney opens

The Virginia Dixie Majors State Baseball Tournament opens today at South Boston’s C.H. Friend Field with six teams competing for the state title and a berth in the Dixie Majors World Series.

A tripleheader is on tap for today’s opening round action with host South Boston facing Cumberland in the nightcap at 8 p.m.

If South Boston loses tonight’s opener it will play Saturday at 5 p.m. A win by South Boston tonight will put it in a winner’s bracket game Saturday at 8 p.m.

After today’s opening-round tripleheader, the six-team double-elimination tournament will go to doubleheaders each day, with the tournament championship game set for Tuesday night, or, if necessary, Wednesday night.

Goochland won last year’s state tournament here, with South Boston as the runner-up. South Boston won the state tournament when it was played here in 2010, giving the team what was, at that time, its first state championship in six years.
