More baseball tournaments begin today

Another round of Dixie Baseball tournaments begins today, with the Halifax County-South Boston Dixie Baseball Pre-Majors all-stars hosting the Dixie Baseball Pre-Majors State Tournament.

Also starting today, the Scottsburg Dixie Youth Baseball O-zone all-stars host South Boston and Halifax all-star teams in the District 2 O-Zone League Tournament.

Nine teams, including the Halifax-County South Boston all-stars, will compete for the Dixie Baseball Pre-Majors State Tournament title in the tournament set to begin today at C.H. Friend Field in South Boston.

Halifax County-South Boston will play Goochland today at 7 p.m. in the opening day of the tournament.

The tournament begins at 10 a.m. today with a game between Mecklenburg and Carroll County, followed by a 1 p.m. game between Franklin County and Amherst.

Buckingham and Powhatan play at 4 p.m. before Halifax County-South Boston and Goochland play the opening-day finale.

A win Friday has Halifax County-South Boston playing at 7 p.m. Saturday, while a loss in its opening game has Halifax County-South Boston playing at 4 p.m. Saturday. 

Amelia drew a bye for the opening day and plays the winner of the Franklin County-Amherst game at 10 a.m. Saturday.

Admission to the tournament is free for children under the age of 6.

Admission is $5 on opening day (Friday) for children ages 6-12 and $6 for adults ages 13 and up.

Admission for the remainder of the tournament is $4 for children ages 6-12 and $5 for adults ages 13 and up.

The extra $1 charged on opening day per person goes toward a Dixie Baseball scholarship fund.

The Dixie Baseball Pre-Majors state champion will travel to Guntersville, Alabama for the Pre-Majors World Series starting July 26.

Three teams, including host Scottsburg, will compete in the Dixie Youth Baseball O-Zone League District 2 Tournament, beginning today with opening ceremonies at 6:30 p.m.

South Boston faces Scottsburg tonight at 7:30 p.m. in the opener, and Halifax and South Boston play Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

Scottsburg hosts Halifax Sunday at 7:30 p.m., with the championship game scheduled for Monday at 7:30 p.m.

If the tournament is extended, the championship game will be Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

The Dixie Youth Baseball O-Zone state tournament begins July 13 in Amherst.

Currently under way is the Cal Ripken State Tournament for 11- and 12-year-olds, hosted by the Halifax County South (HCS) Cal Ripken Baseball League at Conner Fields in Cluster Springs.

Both the HCS 11-year-old and 12-year-old Cal Ripken all-star teams are playing in the tournament, with four games scheduled each day, with the first games starting at 11 a.m. today, Saturday and Sunday. 

No gate fee is being charged for those wishing to attend the tournament, which is expected to run through Monday.
