The Halifax American Angels X-play all-stars won the opener of a best-of-three series 14-6 over Halifax National Saturday in the Dixie Softball District 7 X-play tournament in Brookneal.
Halifax American and Halifax National played last night, with National needing a win to stay alive in the best-of-three series for the district title, with a third game scheduled for today at 6 p.m. if necessary.
Trailing 5-2 after three innings, American scored five runs in the fourth and seven runs in the fifth inning to win the game.
Each team scored once in the second inning Saturday, American when Savanna Cabaniss walked and scored on an error and National when Makala Pulliam singled and later scored.
Jessica Balducci walked and scored on an error for American in the third inning, and National responded with three runs off walks to Maisey Mitchell, Chloe Loftis and Cassidy Thompson, a hit batsman and base hit from Shareika Puryear.
A five-run fourth inning gave American the lead for good after walks to Dee Dee Jeffress, Kayla Waller and Christia Wood, a single by Shekeria Chandler and a triple by Balducci.
American scored seven runs in the top of the fifth inning, with Jeffress hitting a double and Kayla Townes, Cabaniss, Wood and Chandler getting base hits. Lauryn Chappell and Raegan Ridgeway walked in the inning that gave American a 14-5 lead.
National scored its final run in the fifth inning when Madison Vargas reached base on an error and scored on walks to Gracie Wagstaff, Thompson and Puryear
Cabaniss pitched three innings and Chappell two for American, the pair finishing with eight strikeouts.
Thompson pitched three innings and Wagstaff two frames for National, the pair finishing with seven strikeouts.
