South Boston Post 8 wins first game

The South Boston American Legion Post 8 Junior Legion baseball team got only one hit but used 14 walks, its defense and the pitching of Seth Elliott and Colby Grissom to beat Christiansburg Post 59 on Wednesday.

Kelonte Gutrich had the only hit for Post 8, a second-inning single, but his team scored its runs off walks and productive at-bats, according to Head Coach Jody Nelson.

“We didn’t hit very well, but we didn’t have a lot of chances to hit,” Nelson said.

“We scored eight runs, mainly because of walks and productive outs.

“We put the ball in play, we played great, defensively, and Seth and Colby both did a great job on the mound.”

Four walks helped give Post 8 a 3-0 lead after one inning.  Tre’ Watson, Tristan Howerton and Bradley Tickle drew walks, with Watson scoring on a passed ball, Howerton on a RBI sacrifice fly by Will Harris and Tickle on a passed ball.

Seven walks helped Post 8 score four runs in the third inning, with Howerton, Harris, Michael Watts and Hunter Byrnes each drawing a walk and scoring, Howerton after stealing home.

Harris scored on a bases-loaded walk, with Ryan Powell getting an RBI, Watts scored when Gutrich reached base on an error and Byrnes scored on a bases-loaded walk to Watson.

Post 8 added its final run in the top of the fourth inning on walks to Antwaun Tucker, Justin Womack and Watts, with Tucker scoring on a RBI sacrifice fly by Shane Bousman.

Christiansburg scored an unearned run in the fourth inning and another unearned run in the fifth inning, but couldn’t put together a rally against either Elliott or Grissom.

Elliott allowed no runs on three hits, while striking out four and walking none in three innings.

Grissom allowed two unearned runs on two hits in four innings of work while striking out six batters and walking four.
