Wins keep coming for Comets girls soccer

It was not the best performance the Halifax County High School varsity girls soccer team has had this season, but it was good enough.

The Comets overcame a sluggish first half and went on to defeat Park View High School 5-0 Wednesday night in South Hill.

Wednesday night’s victory improved the Comets’ record to 4-1 on the season, as the team heads into tonight’s road game against Magna Vista High School.

“We didn’t play well, especially in the first half,” said Comets Head Coach Sid Young.

“We were very lethargic, and Park View came out and went after it pretty hard. We were very lucky that Park View didn’t score on us in the first half. They came awfully close a couple of times.”

Halifax County High School got two goals each from Camey Reese and Gabby Medley in the win, with Jaynee Campbell also scoring a goal.

Reese scored her first of the game on a shot at the 14:37 mark of the first half to give the Comets the lead. Medley scored her first goal of the game at the 26:31 mark of the first half to put the Comets up 2-0.

With the Comets leading 2-0 going into the second half, Campbell added to the Comets’ lead with a goal at the 17:20 mark of the second half to make it a 3-0 score. Reese scored her second goal of the game at the 20-minute mark, and Medley scored the Comets’ final goal with six minutes left in the game.

“We played a little better in the second half,” Young pointed out.

“We did a better job of moving to the ball in the second half. In the first half, we were waiting for it. We also did a little better job passing and communicated a little better in the second half.”

The Comets had a huge edge in shots on goal, getting 33 shots in the game as compared to nine for Park View High School. Halifax County had a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks.

In direct kicks, Park View High School had five, with the Comets getting two.
