The Halifax County High School varsity softball team is starting the 2012 season the same way it did last year, pummeling Heritage 15-0 Monday in Lynchburg in its season opener. Sam Gibson and Lindsey Wilkins combined to pitch a one-hitter, and Halifax County finished with 12 hits against the Pioneers, including a two-run homer and RBI single from Jennifer Lacks, a double, single and RBI from Meg Bane and three hits and three runs scored by VeVe Brandon.
Kate Bane had a hit and two RBI, Gibson and Kelsey White each had an RBI, and Sydney Puryear, BriAna Pierce and Tayler Mosley added hits for the Comets.
Both Gibson and Wilkins did a good job on the mound in the opener, with Gibson hurling the first three innings and Wilkins the final two innings of the five-inning game, according to Comets Head Coach Melanie Saunders.
Gibson and Wilkins each struck out three batters, and each allowed one base runner, Gibson with a walk and Wilkins after a Heritage base hit.
“Offensively, we had a little trouble getting our timing down, but we settled down,” Saunders pointed out.
Singles by Brandon and Puryear and one of six errors committed by Heritage for the game helped give Halifax a 2-0 lead after one inning.
The Comets scored four runs in the second inning, courtesy of two-out singles from Mosley and Brandon, two Heritage errors and consecutive RBI singles by Meg Bane and Lacks.
Halifax got the runs it needed to help end the contest by scoring nine runs in the fourth inning, with the first eight Comets batters reaching base.
Lacks slugged a two-run homer, Kate Bane hit an RBI single, Meg Bane a double and Gibson a base hit for the Comets, and Gibson and White collected RBIs in the nine-run inning.
