Monica Puckett won her singles match and teamed with Shania DeJarnette to win at number one doubles, but the Halifax County High School girls tennis team dropped a 7-2 scrimmage decision to Randolph-Henry at home Wednesday.
Puckett scored a 6-1, 7-5 win at number one singles and won with DeJarnette in doubles 8-4, but at all other positions his team had players seeing their first action in a real match, according to Comets’ Head Coach Greg Donner.
Most impressive, Donner said, was Dria Brandon, who stretched her match to over two hours before falling in a tie-break.
“Dria is playing very well, and for her to show such promise at the number three spot is impressive,” he said, adding Alyssa Keats played a close match at number four singles and joined Baylee Snead for a close match at number two doubles.
“These girls are playing at a very high placement for first-time players, and most of them have never played before two weeks ago, so our progress is beyond what I would expect.’
Four other newcomers saw action during the scrimmage, Lexi Reaves and Shanique Osborne at numbers five and six singles, and Marilyn Fisher and Elixis Ward at number three doubles.
Many of the matches lasted lasted over an hour and a half, and the scores were very close, Donner noted.
“We are showing improvement, and the girls are starting to work on basic skills,” he added.
“I believe we will continue to improve and by season’s end should be playing at a good level.”
