Jaynee Campbell scored two goals, one in each half, and the Halifax County High School varsity girls soccer team defeated Dan River 2-0 for its second straight scrimmage shutout. The win came one night after the Comets defeated Heritage 2-0, and both results obviously were pleasing to Comets’ Head Coach Sid Young, who is working with a somewhat younger roster this season.
“We’ve had two scrimmages, both 2-0 shutouts, and what’s been a pleasant surprise is we’re starting players like Amanda Reaves, who’s never played before,” said Young.
“Tonight, Jordan Lane, a former jayvee, did well as did Lucy Morrison, a freshman, with exceptional skill.
“We moved the ball well, and we’ve got some skill,” added Young, whose team is blessed with more depth this season at key positions.
“Last year, we had to use some of our ball handlers and speed on defense, and that took away from our offense,” said Young.
“Camey (Reese) has played sweeper, primarily, but we can move her to midfield with Jaynee, and both have good ball-handling skill and speed.
“At wings, we have about six and eight players I can use, and several l can interchange at forwards.”
“On defense, we’re still trying to develop a little bit of depth there,” Young added.
“We used a couple of our wings on defense last night, and they didn’t do bad at all.”
Any worries about his team playing back-to-back scrimmages were erased with Tuesday’s solid performance, Young noted.
“I was a little worried about us being tired from last night, but we did okay,” said Young.
