Heritage scored first, but the Halifax County High School jayvee boy’s soccer team notched four of the next five goals on the way to a 4-2 win over the Pioneers Monday at Tuck Dillard Stadium, in the Comets’ initial scrimmage of the season.
Caleb Daniel, Edgar Rodriguez, Will Miller and Joey Gasperini scored goals for the Comets, who trailed early 1-0 before taking a 2-1 lead at halftime.
Halifax scored the first goal of the second half, and Heritage responded to cut its deficit to one goal before the Comets added another goal in the closing minutes according to Jayvee Head Coach Mario Sadler.
“I was very, very happy with the way the guys played today,” said Sadler.
“Heritage came out and got an early goal, but the guys picked up the tempo and worked hard.
“There are some things we need to work on, but overall I’m happy with the way they played, considering the fact we had only one day of practice this week due to weather.
“They still need to talk a little more on the defensive end, but as a whole they did well.”
Daniel kept after a loose ball in the box and scored his teams’ first goal, and Gasperini ripped in a shot from 18 yards out before halftime, according to Sadler.
Miller was in the right place at the right time to collect a loose ball in the box and score the Comets’ third goal, and Rodriguez scored on a breakaway with a shot from about 20 yards out that found the back of the net, Sadler added.
Isak Schafer was in goal for the Comets against Heritage.
