Amber Walton had a top-10 finish in the high jump to lead the Halifax County High School indoor track team contingent at the Group AAA State Indoor Track Meet this weekend at the Boo Williams Sportplex in Hampton. Walton’s jump was measured at 5-02, good for 10th-place in the high jump, which was won by Brianna Hayes of Matoaca High School at a height of 5-08.
A total of 51 high school teams from throughout Virginia competed at the girl’s State AAA meet, with Cosby High School of Chesterfield County winning the meet with 54 points.
Walton’s teammate, Mikayla Boyd, competed in the triple jump at the state meet, finishing 25th with a mark of 34-04.25. Shakeela Saunders of Nansemond River High School won the event with a mark of 40-03.50.
Marcus Bowman competed in the 55-meter hurdles at the AAA state meet, finishing with a time of 8.47 in the preliminaries, which was good for 28th-place.
Trey Holloway of Grassfield High School won the event with a time of 7:32.
A total of 58 teams competed in the boys’ state AAA meet, which was won by Western Branch High School with 48 points.
