Boy’s indoor track team ties for title

It came down to the last event, the 4x400 relay, and the last runner, Juan Leon, for the Halifax County High School boy’s indoor track team to have a chance at sharing the Western Valley District Indoor Track championship, and Leon and teammates Miles Claiborne, Roland Brandon and Will Brooks pulled out the win that gave the Comets a share of the title.

The district indoor track championship meet was held Saturday at Tolsma Track Center at Liberty University.

Halifax County and Patrick Henry tied for the indoor district championship with 134 points apiece, ahead of GW-Danville (78.4), William Fleming (61.5) and Franklin County (54).

The Halifax County High School girl’s indoor track team, behind first-place performances by the 800-meter and 1,600-meter relay teams, finished fifth in the girl’s district championship meet.

Halifax County finished with 71 points, compared to 78 for Franklin County, 84 for William Fleming, 92 for Patrick Henry and 132 for GW-Danville.

The Comets boys won the 800-meter relay event, and Jones won the high jump, but Halifax County got a number of good finishes throughout the meet to be in position to challenge Patrick Henry for the top spot, according to Coach Jerry McCoy.

“I just kept saying that if we can keep it close, we have a chance to win this thing,” said McCoy.

“The guys believed in that and stayed with it, turning out some of the best times we have seen all year.”

Claiborne put the Comets in contention for the early lead in the 4x400 relay, and ninth-graders Brandon and Brooks pulled the Comets to within 30-40 meters of the lead runner from Fleming, before Leon took over to run the anchor leg, according to McCoy.

“Leon got the baton and raced his heart out to catch him as the Fleming runner ran out of gas,” said McCoy.

“The last 20 meters he flew and reeled him in winning by about a tenth of a second to seal the tie between us and PH.

“The place erupted, and Leon was carried off with the trophy in his hand as we split the championship with PH.

“It was an awesome moment for every one of those kids.  It’s a life change for most of them.  The announcer even said after the race you couldn’t pay to see or write a finish like that.

“I could not be any prouder of a team.  They worked their hearts out all day long and finally we can bring a little pride and hardware back to Halifax, and that’s what it’s about.”

“I am so proud of all the hard work and dedication these athletes have shown this season,” continued McCoy.

“The teams never gave up and just kept giving their all to try and give ourselves a chance to win this thing.

“The girls put on a great performance but our lack in size and depth is what hurt us.

“By my number we are taking 29 athletes to the next meet (regionals) in Maryland.

“That was my goal, to compete for a championship and take a big number to the next level and show what we have accomplished.”
