Eight Comets grapplers advance

Eight Halifax County High School wrestlers qualified for this weekend’s Northwest region Wrestling Tournament, while the Comets finished fourth as a team in Saturday’s Western Valley District Tournament in Rocky Mount.

Ethan Collie finished as the runner-up in the 120-pound weight class and Kiaos Ragsdale finished second in the 182-pound weight class to lead the Comets’ effort.

“Ethan and Kiaos getting to the finals was big as far as setting them up for the first round next week,” Comets Head Coach Brady Taylor said of his top two finishers.

“Kiaos wrestled a good match in the finals, and was close a couple times to pinning the Franklin County kid, but he just didn’t get the call.”

Two Comets wrestlers, Gannon Griffin (138) and James Anderson, won their contests in the consolation bracket finals to finish third in their respective weight classes.

Four Comets wrestlers qualified for the Northwest Region Tournament by earning fourth-place finishes in their respective weight classes. They included Parth Patel (126), Harrison Turnbull (132), Tommie Hariston (170) and Ezra Walker (220).

“The tournament went pretty much the way it was seeded,” Taylor pointed out. “We would have liked to have qualified a few more guys for the regionals, but unfortunately it didn’t happen.

“We’ll look over the regional brackets as we get results from the other districts and get an idea of who we’ll be matched up with,” Taylor added.

“There are a few teams that we can match up pretty well with stylewise in the region, and we expect to win some matches up there. The ultimate goal for the regionals is getting to the state tournament, and we’ll try to put as many in as possible. We have a series of tournament specific moves we’ll be working on this week, and hopefully we can come through.”

Tournament host Franklin County High School won the tournament, keeping alive a streak of district championships that started in 1988 when it was a member of the Roanoke valley District.

Franklin County won the championship in 11 of the 14 weight classes.
