Longtime Halifax County coach elected to hall of fame

Halifax County resident and long-time coach softball and baseball coach E.C. Lewis has been elected to the Dixie Softball Hall of Fame.

Lewis coached Dixie softball from 1991-2002, taking a team to the state tournament each of the last seven years and winning several sportsmanship awards in district and state tournaments during that time.

Lewis coached his Belles softball team to three 15-0 records in regular-season competition, and he took his Debs all-star teams to three World Series from 2000-2002.

Lewis’ 2000 team finished third and his 2001 team finished second in the World Series, and Lewis’ 2000 team won the Obie E. Evans Sportsmanship Award.

Lewis also coached a total of 19 Dixie baseball teams over a period of 14 years, carrying several teams to district and state tournaments and one team, the 14-year-old all-stars to the World Series.

“This is a well deserved award for a great coach that taught the game of softball and baseball along with sportsmanship,” remarked Virginia Dixie Softball State Director Frank Perkins.

“Halifax County boys and girls benefited from his teaching and will be influenced by him throughout their lives.”
