The Halifax County Middle School girl’s basketball team played perhaps its best game of the season Saturday at a time when it needed it most, beating E.W. Wyatt 38-24 in Emporia. With the win, the Lady Lions locked up the East Division two seed and a home quarterfinal game for the upcoming Southside Middle School Conference (SMSC) Tournament.
A loss would have put the Lady Lions on the road for the entire tourney, something coach James Smith wanted to avoid.
“It’s probably the best we’ve played all year, especially the first half, and defensively we shut them down” Smith commented.
“We shot the ball a whole lot better, and we passed the ball and took good shots. We played smart basketball,” he added.
Ghanija Gooden led the Lions with 14 points, Timonee McCargo scored 12 points, and Shadajah Davis added six for Halifax County, which also got three points from A’Kiya Guill, two points from Brittany Clark and one from Asia Carter.
Halifax County also had one of its better days of the season at the free throw line at Wyatt, hitting eight of 17 chances.
The Lady Lions got off to a blazing start and led 18-5 after the first quarter, with Gooden scoring six points, Davis five and McCargo four points.
Halifax extended its lead to 25-7 at halftime, with Gooden adding four points in the second quarter, and McCargo added six and Gooden four in the third quarter to make it 35-15 with a quarter remaining.
Clark hit her team’s last basket in the fourth quarter as Halifax closed out the win.
Halifax County (9-3, 5-3 SMSC) hosts Bonner tonight at 4:30 p.m. in a non-conference game.
