For the first time in the nine-year history of the Halifax County High School Holiday Classic Basketball Tournament, the Halifax County High School varsity girls basketball team will not be in the championship finals. The Comets fell to Gretna High School 61-59 in overtime in Tuesday’s opening round contest, leaving the Comets to face Park View High School of South Hill in Wednesday’s tournament consolation game, which tips off at 3 p.m.
This marks the first time in the nine years that Halifax County High School has staged a girls tournament as part of the Holiday Classic that the Comets will not be in the tournament championship game.
For Gretna High School, this marks the first time in the eight years that they have participated in the tournament that it will have a team playing in the tournament championship game.
Halifax County High School led by 14 points late in the third quarter before falling victim to Gretna High School’s pressure defense. The Comets had opportunities to win the game in the final minute of regulation and another opportunity late in the four-minute overtime stanza to pull out the win but was unable to do it.
Brianna Lindsey led the Comets with 24 points. Briyana Jackson followed with nine points.
The loss dropped the Comets’ record to 4-5 overall on the season.
