Comets grapplers win one of four

“If we had only had a little more Kiaos Ragsdales we’d have had a heck of a night,” mused Halifax County High School Head Wrestling Coach Brady Taylor.

Ragsdale, who competes in the 182-pound weight class, went undefeated Wednesday night, winning all four of his contests in the Western Valley District Super Quad at Halifax County High School.

The Comets grappler established himself as a top district contender in the 182-pound weight class with pins in all four of his bouts in Wednesday night’s event, the first of two regular-season duals matches involving Western Valley District teams.

“Kiaos had a really big night for us,” Taylor pointed out.

“Going undefeated tonight is a big thing. Hopefully he can keep that up.”

The Comets had a tough night, winning only one of its four matches, that being a 54-18 win over William Fleming High School. William Fleming High School gave up six wins to the Comets through forfeits.

“We’ve got to do a little better than that,” Taylor pointed out.

“We’ve got to put more out there.”

The Comets coach attributed some of the team’s somewhat sub-par performance to a pair of factors.

“It’s a combination of inexperience and being at home,” Taylor said.

“We’re actually a tougher team on the road. We seem to wrestle better outside of our gym. I don’t know if it’s nerves or what it is. But, we seem to compete better on the road.”

The Comets opened the night by competing against defending and multi-time Western Valley District champion Franklin County High School. Winning only one of the 14 weight classes, the Comets lost to the Eagles 73-6.

Halifax County lost to neighboring rival GW of Danville 52-24 in its second-round contest, winning only four of the 14 weight classes in that contest. The Comets topped William Fleming High School in their third-round contest, and then dropped a 60-24 decision to Patrick Henry High School.

While the Comets didn’t come out as well as they had hoped, Wednesday night’s event gave Taylor and his coaching staff to gauge where the team was in comparison to the other district teams.

“This gives us an aiming point for the next Western Valley District duals, and sets us up for the (district) tournament,” Taylor remarked.

“We’ve got a lot of work to do, but we know what to work on.”

Among the Comets wrestlers that turned in better performances, Parth Patel (126 pounds), Ethan Collie (120 pounds), Ryan Throckmorton (113 pounds) and James Anderson (160 pounds) each had two wins.

“Parth Patel is quietly having a decent run,” Taylor noted.

“He’s coming around. We’re impressed with Parth.”

Franklin County High School emerged as the top team, winning all four of its contests. Along with beating Halifax County 73-6, the Eagles topped GW 78-0, beat William Fleming 77-0 and won a tough 47-26 decision over Patrick Henry High School.

Patrick Henry High School won three of its four matches, GW won two contests, and the Comets had one victory.

The Comets will now have a lengthy break, as the team will not wrestle again until they compete in a quad event at Heritage High School in Lynchburg on Jan. 4.
