Freshmen clobber Franklin County

The Halifax County High School ninth-grade basketball team, with scoring contributions from virtually its entire roster, routed Franklin County 64-18 at home Tuesday.

Ry’Mel Windsor led Comets’ scorers with eight points, while Justin Penick, Kyran Adams, Devonta Ford, Aubrey Jordan and Felix Scott added six points apiece and Justin Williams, Ra’Mel Hill and Markyee Thomas five points apiece.

Jalen Beck scored four points, Peter Gasperini added a three-pointer, and Roger Mills and Robert Oliver scored two points apiece for Halifax County.

The Comets also were sharp from the foul line in the game, connecting on nine of 12 free throw opportunities.

“We shot free throws well and made layups early, everybody got touches, and I think every kid got a shot at the basket,” said Comets’ Head Coach Dearrian Snead.

“We did some good things tonight.  I thought we did a good job on our inbounds plays and a good job in our zone defense.

“We have to still work on our man defense and switches, and we didn’t box out as well at times.

“But, it’s a win and we’ll take it.”

Windsor and Scott each scored four points in the first quarter as Halifax vaulted to a 12-2 lead, and the Comets led by as much as 20-2 early in the second quarter before settling for a 23-11 halftime advantage.

Halifax got scoring from seven different players in building a 45-13 lead after three quarters, and they cruised home from there, outscoring Franklin County 19-5 in the final quarter.

“We have a real scrappy group,” Snead said in noting his team’s hustle throughout the contest despite building a big lead.

“They have a lot of energy and I will say this, when it’s time to play basketball they go out, play real hard and have a lot of fun.

“They’re a real unselfish group, too, not a bunch of “me” guys, which I really, really like.

“We have some things to work on, but we’re going to have fun and keep on playing.”
