Proposal may shake up Western Valley District

The Virginia High School League is proposing to form a new district that will dissolve the Western Valley District as it currently stands. According to a report published late Tuesday on, the Virginia High School League’s new district will include Roanoke schools Patrick Henry High School and William Fleming High School, Franklin County High School of Rocky Mount, Bassett High School and Magna Vista High School of Ridgeway.

The new district, which has not been named, will be a combination of Group AAA and Group AA schools.

There was no information available as to what would happen with Halifax County High School and GW High School of Danville.

An attempt was made to contact Halifax County High School Athletic Director Allen Lawter, but Lawter had not been able to be reached by press time.

Halifax County High School, GW, Franklin County, Patrick Henry and William Fleming currently form the Western Valley District, a district composed of Group AAA schools.

If approved the new district would become effective with the start of the 2014-2015 school year. The full committee of the VHSL will have to vote on the proposal in the spring.
