Comets gridders earn all-district honors

A dozen players on the Halifax County High School varsity football team have been named to the All-Western Valley District Team. None of the Comets players earned First Team honors. As a result, none of the Comets players are eligible for consideration for the All-Northwest Region Team.

“I really thought we would get one or two of our players on the First Team,” said Comets Head Coach Dave Wojtecki.

“But, when you don’t win any district games, it makes it pretty hard to get players on the First Team.”

The Comets had seven players to be named the Second Team, including senior running back Trey Roberts who ran for 961 yards on 174 carries this season and scored nine touchdowns.

Others named to the Second Team included wide receiver Coby Markham who ran for 256 yards and a touchdown. Junior offensive tackle Seth Adams and senior offensive guard Josh Spainhour also earned Second Team honors.

Comets defensive players earning Second Team honors include senior safety Miles Claiborne, who logged 85 solo tackles for the season, defensive tackle Chris Baisch and senior defensive end Joe Martin.

Baisch, a junior, had one sack and 43 solo tackles including two for a loss. Martin had three sacks and 65 solo tackles, 10 of which resulted in a loss.

Five Comets players earned Honorable Mention honors. The group includes running back Alonzo Bennett, kicker Kyle Lacks, sophomore kickoff returner Devan Richardson, wide receiver Cody Palmer and senior linebacker DeAndre Delaware.

Franklin County High School junior running back Chance Tyree was named as the Offensive Player of the Year. The Lineman of the Year was Shaun Greer, a senior offensive tackle from Franklin County High School. Patrick Henry High School linebacker Demetrius Anderson was named Defensive Player of the Year.

The Coach of the Year in the Western Valley District was Franklin County High School Coach Chris Jones.

Franklin County High School had 11 players named to the First Team. Patrick Henry High School had nine players earn First Team honors, GW had seven First Team picks and William Fleming High School had one player selected to the First Team.
