Bistro 1888 takes title

 


Bistro 1888/McGhee Insurance/Crowell Motor Co. exploded for seven runs in the top of the seventh inning and held on defeat Bug Co. South/Heritage House/Thomas Bros. Body Shop 9-3 Sunday in the championship game of the Halifax County Old Timers’ Baseball League Tournament. With the game deadlocked at 2-2, Bistro 1888 got its first three batters in the inning on base via walks. Willie Sellars opened the scoring with a two-RBI hit to put Bistro 1888 on top 4-2.

Tigue Day reached base on a fielder’s choice, and Frankie Mitchell followed with a two-RBI double to put Bistro 1888 up 6-2. A run-scoring single by Kevin Elliott made the score 7-2 and a two-RBI single from Rodney Mosley gave Bistro 1888 a 9-2 lead.

Bug Co. South/Heritage House/Thomas Bros. Body Shop stirred things up in the bottom of the final inning with a one-out single. A two-out single by Dean McCubbins plated Medley to make the score 9-3. But, that was all Bug Co. South/Heritage House/Thomas Bros. Body Shop could do as Bistro 1888/McGhee Insurance/Crowell Motor Co. quickly got the final out to secure the 9-3 win and the league’s tournament championship.

Bistro 1888/McGhee Insurance/Crowell Motor Co. got off to a quick start with Mosley kicking things off with a solo homer in the first inning to give the team a 1-0 lead.

Bug Co. South/Heritage House/Thomas Bros. Body Shop tied the game in the bottom of the second inning when James Medley nailed a single with two out and later scored on a single by Kenneth Day.

Bistro 1888/McGhee Insurance/Crowell Motor Co. regained the lead at 2-1 in the top of the third inning when Sellars came up with a single and later scored on a hit by Mitchell.

The game tightened up when Bug Co. South/Heritage House/Thomas Bros. Body Shop tied the contest at 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth inning on a walk to Charles Hazelwood and a run-scoring single by Mark Yates.

Bistro 1888/McGhee Insurance/Crowell Motor Co. had 12 hits enroute to winning the game. Mosley led the team with a 3-4 effort at the plate that included a solo homer, a double and a single, and three RBIs. Sellars had a big day as well with a 3-3 afternoon that included three singles and two RBIs.

Frankie Mitchell had two hits and three RBIs, Kevin Elliott had two hits and one RBI and Mark Campbell had two hits.

Bug Co. South/Heritage House/Thomas Bros. Body Shop had six hits for the day, with Medley leading the team with two hits. Dean McCubbins, Kenneth Day and Mark Yates each had a hit and one RBI. Mike Dickey also had a hit in the game.
