GW put a pair of touchdowns on the scoreboard in the first half and held on to edge the Halifax County High School junior varsity football team 13-7 Thursday night in Danville. Thursday night’s loss left the Comets with a 5-5 record for the season.
“The kids played very hard throughout the game,” said Comets Head Coach Kenneth Day.
“We got some big stops and fumble recoveries from the defense to give us a chance to score.”
GW jumped on top with a 15-yard touchdown run in the first quarter that put the Eagles up 7-0, A 70-yard touchdown run in the second quarter put GW up 13-0.
The Comets’ James Anderson and Tim Desmond blocked the extra-point attempt, leaving GW with a 13-0 lead it held until halftime.
Halifax County High School picked up its lone score in the third quarter on a 5-yard run by Donta Crews. Keith Crews kicked the extra point to make what would become the eventual final score of 13-7.
The Comets put together a good late-game march on their final possession, only to see it thwarted when GW intercepted a pass at the GW 25-yard line.
Halifax County High School had several players to make an impact in the game. Defensively, Ezra Walker recovered a fumble and Ja’Rell Cole recovered two fumbles.
On the offensive side of things, Jaquan Claiborne had a big catch and run to set up the Comets’ touchdown in the third quarter. Truman Brown and Tre’ Morgan came up with key catches to help sustain some drives.
