Comets spikers sweep William Fleming

The Halifax County High School varsity volleyball team scored its ninth win of the season Tuesday night, sweeping William Fleming High School in Roanoke in three games in the best-of-five-game match. Halifax County won the first two games by a 25-11 score and completed the sweep with a 25-10 win in the third game.

Tuesday night’s win improved the Comets’ record to 9-6 overall and 3-2 in Western Valley District play.

“Our girls played fantastic,” said Comets Head Coach Steve Mattox.

“It was a solid win. Everybody played and everybody played well. I told the girls they had to play with intensity and take it to them (William Fleming) on the first point and don’t let up. That’s pretty much how we played the entire night. We never lost the lead in any game.”

Mattox said the team did well with its serving and setting and logged 20 kills.

“They put down quite a few kills,” Mattox said of his team.

“The kill percentage was probably the highest it has been all season.”

The sweep of William Fleming High School in Tuesday night’s contest was a good tune-up for the Comets, who were set to face district leader Patrick Henry High School here last night in a match that was big for the Comets in terms of their bid for the district title.

“Hopefully we can build off of this when we face Patrick Henry,” Mattox noted.

The Comets also have a match here tonight, facing Magna Vista High School at Halifax County High School at 7 p.m. Junior varsity action at 5:30 p.m. will precede the varsity contest.
