Comets pair pace harriers

Ethan Collie and Lucy Morrison paced the Halifax County High School boys and girls cross country teams, with the Comets boys team finishing third and the Comets girls taking second place Wednesday in a six-team meet at Dan Daniel Park in Danville. Collie turned in a time of 19 minutes and 32 seconds enroute to his fifth-place overall finish in the boys meet. Morrison clocked in at 26:06, finishing third overall.

The Comets girls team lost to Chatham High School by one point, 38-37, with meet host GW of Danville finishing third with 55 points.

Halifax County High School’s second-place finish was a good showing, as three of the Comets’ top eight runners did not compete. The Comets had five girls to finish in the top 15 and six of them completed the event in less than 30 minutes.

“We are happy with the girls’ effort and they really stepped up to fill in those spots,” said Comets Coach Brady Taylor.

“Obviously we would have liked to have the whole thing, but to finish so well is a good sign. Hopefully we’ll get everyone healthy by next week’s District Preview race and have a great run.”

Gretna High School won the boys meet, edging Chatham High School by seven points, 44-51. Halifax County High School finished third with 76 points.

“The boys ran a smart race, but just came up a little short,” Taylor remarked.

“We had a slower first mile than usual, and spent the rest of the race working to pass people. Our top three boys were running 33rd, 34th and 35th after the first mile. To work their way into the top 15 shows how hard they ran miles two and three.”

Taylor said he and Coach David Riddle are pleased with the improvement the team is making.

“Coach Riddle and I are proud of the improvement we are seeing across the board,” Taylor said.

“Our girls are closing the gap on Lucy, and this was the first race in years that our girls team finished 1-5 with a time difference of less than two minutes.

“Our guys have really worked hard down the ladder as well,” Taylor continued, “with (runners) numbers 1-7 finishing within two minutes and 30 seconds. Both teams have been working hard, and if we can keep it up, we should turn in a good outing in the district meets.”
