The Halifax County High School varsity volleyball team had a tough night of it Tuesday night, falling to Patrick Henry High School in three straight games. Facing the Patriots in Roanoke, PH swept the Comets 25-9, 25-19 and 25-13.
The loss in the Western Valley District contest puts the Comets at 6-5 overall and 1-1 in district play.
“We didn’t play well at PH,” said Comets Head Coach Steve Mattox.
“We came out flat in game one and the score is indicative of that. I don’t think we ever regrouped.”
Mattox said the Comets were plagued by a problem that has emerged in previous matches.
“We fell into the same old trap where we didn’t move our feet at all, and their (Patrick Henry High School’s) libero on the back row dug up a lot of balls,” he explained.
“We had okay passing, and our service was okay, but we couldn’t get many service opportunities because we couldn’t break serve.
Mattox said there were a couple of bright spots, including the play of Kendall Lloyd.
Lloyd had 10 service points, a dozen good serves that included three aces, logged four kills and tallied 14 good passes.
“If you look at Kendall’s stats, points-wise she kept us in a lot of the games,” said Mattox.
“She played really well, and for the most part everybody else kind of dropped off.”
The Comets were back in action last facing, facing GW of Danville here at Halifax County High School.
