Two Comets golfers qualify for state tourney

Halifax County High School senior golfer Cody Spencer finished as the individual runner-up in yesterday’s Northwest Region Golf Tournament at the West Lake Golf & Country Club in Hardy. Spencer lost  to Mountain View High School’s Mason Stutler on the first hole in a playoff to decide the regional championship.

Both golfers had finished their regulation 18 holes deadlocked with an even-par round of 72. Spencer carded an even-par round of 72, getting three birdies in the first nine holes to finish the front side one-under-par at 35. He struggled some on the back nine, coming up with three birdies to counter two bogeys and a double-bogey, finishing the back nine one-over-par at 37.

Halifax County High School finished third in the tournament, one position short of advancing to next week’s Group AAA State Tournament.

Spencer and Comets teammate Dillon Puryear qualified for the state tournament as individuals.

Along with Spencer’s even-par round of 72 and Puryear carding a round of 75, the Comets got a round of 85 from Peter Gasperini and a round of 91 from Ryan Green to count toward the team’s total of 323.

Josh Irby came in with a round of 93 and Tyler Holt posted a round of 95. Neither of those scores were counted as only the four best scores from each of the eight competing six-player teams counted toward the team total.

The Comets were the top-finishing Western Valley District team as Western Valley District Champion Franklin County High School finished fourth on its home course, and trailed the Comets by 11 shots.

Battlefield High School won yesterday’s Northwest Region Tournament with a 315 team total, edging Mountain View High School by two shots. Yesterday’s win gave the school its first Northwest Region Tournament win since 2008 and its third berth in the Group AAA State Tournament in four years.

Mountain View High School, with its runner-up finish, qualified for the Group AAA State Tournament for the second year in a row. This was the second straight year Mountain View High School has finished as the regional tournament runner-up.

The Comets, with their team total of 323, finished six shots behind Mountain View High School. Franklin County High School (334) and Albemarle High School (336) rounded out the top five.

Broad Run High School (344) Osbourn Park High School (357) and Woodbridge High School (359) rounded out the eight-team field.

Loudon Valley High School, which has won the Northwest Region championship three of the past four years, dropped to Group AA this year and was not in the tournament field.
