The Halifax County High School varsity competition cheerleaders placed first in the Varsity Division and also were named overall Grand Champion at the Third Annual Lancer Cheer Invitational Sept. 23rd at Amherst High School. Powhatan placed second place in the Varsity Division, and Appomattox High School placed third, according to HCHS coach Lauren Owen.
“This was a very important competition for our team because it helped to set the tone for the rest of the season,” said Owen.
“It was a great experience and confidence booster for everyone, which is exactly what we needed.
“I don’t think a lot of people realize how much time and effort goes into competitive cheerleading, but we practice six days a week for a majority of our season. “They did extremely well, and coach Jennifer Whitlow and I could not have asked for a better performance from the squad.”
The team received great feedback from the judges that will help it prepare for their next competition, Oct. 8, at Patrick Henry High School, Owen continued.
“This is a fundraiser for the Susan G. Komen Foundation. We are very excited to be a part of it, because it is one of the largest independent fundraisers that the Foundation has, with 100 percent of the profits from that day being donated.”
