Green’s Folly County Cup Captain Jimmy Clay had said a good start Saturday at Halifax Country Club was a key to his team holding on to the County Cup. His team got that good start and then some, taking a five-point lead into Sunday’s round at Green’s Folly and breezing home to a 16-point win that kept the County Cup at Green’s Folly Golf Course for another year.
Green’s Folly led Halifax Country Club 33.5-20.5 after alternate shot and best ball matches Sunday morning. It clinched the Cup later that afternoon after Brandon Harris, David Day and Mike Gregory collected a point apiece during singles matches.
“We started out Sunday and kept it going all day,” said Clay.
“The young guys, Brandon Harris and Scott Vaughan, played well, David Graham played well, and the whole team played extremely well.
“This is one time where our length played to our advantage, especially this morning (Sunday).
“The golf course was wet. We paired some of the young guys together, and length was a huge advantage for us.
“All in all, everybody played well. Of course our bigger guns played well, David, Woody (Clay) and Chris (Young), but the youth came through for us this weekend and played really, really good.”
Green’s Folly led 33.5-20.5 heading into the Sunday afternoon singles matches, so all it needed was three points to win the cup, and it got those after nine holes of the singles matches, according to Clay.
“We didn’t play the full round, because we dominated this morning when we took charge of the match,” noted Clay.
“We played really well this morning, and that kind of sealed the deal for us.”
Some last-second strategy also panned out well for Green’s Folly, Clay added.
“The original plan was for me to play over here (Green’s Folly) in singles matches, and we talked about it and decided I’d play over there,” said Clay
“I beat James (Lewis) two and one, David won two and one, Chris won two and one, and Kevin (Haskins) won two and one.”
Second year County Cup participant Brandon Harris was one of the younger players Clay noted for his solid play all weekend.
Harris said he was more comfortable and confident this time around.
“I played really good this year,” he pointed out.
One thing Harris learned from last year was not to be too aggressive on the golf course in County Cup competition.
“I learned to make them beat you and not try to make a bunch of birdies, because birdies don’t always win, pars do,” said Harris, who was paired up with Jimmy Clay Saturday and Vaughan on Sunday.
“Scott really played well, and it’s his first time out here (County Cup),” Harris pointed out.
“It’s the first time I played the alternate shots format, and I thought I came through on that format better than the best ball format.
“I built some confidence in my game I hope to carry over into future County Cups.”
