Kelonte Gutrich caught a pair of touchdown passes from James Smith Jr. and added another on the ground to lead the Halifax County Middle School football team to a 32-6 win at Bluestone on Wednesday. Halifax led 8-0 after one quarter and 24-0 at halftime before scoring its final touchdown early in the fourth quarter.
Bluestone scored with two minutes remaining in the game on a double-pass play that covered 50 yards, but the Lions were safely ahead by that point.
Halifax opened the scoring with a nine-play drive following a fumble recovery by Chris Lovelace, Smith hitting Gutrich with a 15-yard touchdown pass and Justin Logan running for the two-point conversion to make it 8-0 with 2:20 left in the first period.
Halifax scored on its next possession after Lions’ defender Kelemente Poloa recovered a fumble caused by teammate Jamal Chism.
Smith hit Gutrich from 48 yards out for the score with 4:26 left in the half, and Logan added another two-point conversion run for a 16-0 advantage.
A 55-yard scoring drive with time winding down, capped by a 20-yard Smith to Garrett touchdown pass and a two-point conversion by Smith gave Halifax a 24-0 lead at intermission.
Halifax was stymied by a fumble on its first possession of the second half, but the Lions got the ball right back when Kavon Fitzgerald recovered a Trojans fumble.
Halifax scored in the fourth quarter on a 10-yard run by Gutrich and Raean Logan added the two-point conversion on a pass from Smith.
Smith, a seventh-grader, had 112 yards passing in the game.
