The Halifax County Middle School golf team kept its unblemished record intact Monday with a win at Green’s Folly Golf Course against Ben Franklin Middle School, its second of the year against the Eagles. Halifax County finished with a score of 245, compared to 274 for Ben Franklin, with Matthew Ratliff leading the way with a low score of 43 for his team.
Jamey Binner, Holt Powell and Lance Chappell each shot a 50, and Caleb Cole shot a 52 for the Lions, but those scores may not be good enough to win the upcoming conference tournament, according to coach Charlie Payne.
“That’s not acceptable,” said Payne.
“But, we had some players with marked improvement today, including Gavin Gordon, Justin Womack, Patrick Salley, Kassidy Irby, Lawryn Mayfield, Stephen Comer and Andrew Cole,” he added.
The Lions host Park View in a key match Monday, and they travel to Powhatan for the conference tournament the following Tuesday.
Halifax must show improvement in order to capture the conference title, Payne noted.
“We’ve got to make marked improvement as a team before next week to do what we anticipated doing at the start of the season,” he pointed out.
