Varsity spikers net 3-1 Chatham win

Consistency in serving, an element mostly missing from the varsity volleyball team’s stat sheet in its loss at home to Person High Tuesday, ticked up a notch Thursday at Chatham, with the Comets claiming their third win of the season with a 3-1 win over the Lady Cavaliers. Halifax County won games one and two by 27-25 and 25-10 scores, Chatham won game three 26-24, and Halifax sealed the match win with a 25-15 win in game four.

The Comets recorded 12 service aces and 79 good serves against Chatham, with Chris Bradshaw finishing with four service aces, 17 good serves and 12 service points.

Kate Bane had 15 good serves and two aces, Jordan Miller 14 good serves and one ace, Kelsy Williams 12 good serves and two aces, and Kendall Lloyd nine good serves and two aces.

The return match against Chatham started virtually the same way the first one did at Comets Gym last week, with a tight first game going the way of the Comets, according to coach Steve Mattox.

“Chatham is very tough defensively, and they dig up a lot of balls like a lot of teams we play, which is great heading into district,” he said.

“The first game was a mirror image of the first game here, a tight game.

“It’s kind of weird, because we’d change sides of the court and play entirely differently, a close game one side, and a fairly easy win the other side.

“Game three we should have won, we broke serve at the right point, called a timeout, and did exactly what I told them to do.

“We got one serve in and dumped the second one into the net at game point.”

The Comets played well, but one thing Mattox was discouraged with was foot movement, he explained.

“At times it’s very good, at others it’s very sluggish.

“As a volleyball player, you have to be at the right place, where we call base, but we’re not getting back to base.

“We’re getting burned on balls we definitely can get to.”

Other than that, there were a lot of positives, Mattox said.

“The girls had real nice looks, Meg and Kate played fantastic ball, and they were diving after every ball.

The service game was up, especially Chris Bradshaw, and Whitney White and Gabrielle Spainhour with jump serving.
