Collie wins opener; Comet harriers drop close meets

Ethan Collie scored a convincing win in Thursday’s season-opener for the Halifax County High School cross country team.  Yet, there wasn’t a lot of celebration.

“I’m a little disappointed because I’m not doing quite as well as I was doing last year,” Collie said after touring the Edmunds Park course in a time of 19 minutes and 27 seconds.

“I had hoped for better.”

Collie explained he had trouble at about the two-mile mark of the race.

“I always have trouble right around the second mile, not just on this course, but every course,” Collie pointed out.

Fortunately, Collie had a good enough gap over Prince Edward County High School runner Adam Hunter that he was able to maintain his advantage.

“Collie ran a good race,” remarked Comets Head Coach Brady Taylor.

“He won by almost a minute, so he didn’t have to run faster. We’ll see what happens when he’s pushed. He’s been busting his butt every day and is doing well. His times will get better. We hope that when it comes time for the district meet he’s down in the 17-minute range.”

While it was a good day for Collie, it was somewhat of a disappointing day for the team.

Prince Edward County High School swept both the boys and girls meets. The Comets boys team lost to Prince Edward County High School by one point, 27-28. Halifax County High School’s girls team fell by just a handful of points, 24-31.

“This was not exactly the way we wanted to start the season,” remarked Taylor.

“We wanted to win our first meet of the year and our first meet at home. We came close. The only thing negative is the score.

“We have a lot of inexperienced runners that have never run a real race before,” added Taylor.

“We’ll chalk this one up to inexperience. Next week we expect a different result.”

Sarah Campbell of Prince Edward County High School won the girls meet with a time of 23:54. That was almost three minutes faster than the time of 26:27 posted by Halifax County High School runner Lucy Morrison, who was the runner-up in the race.

The Comets’ Emily Nester placed fourth overall with a time of 28:26 and Kelsey White, the third Comets’ runner to finish, placed eighth overall with a time of 31:20.

“Lucy ran well, and so did Emily,” Taylor said.

“They’re both new runners. For our top three finishers, this was their first time doing it. The more they do it the better they will get. Their times will drop in chunks. It won’t surprise us if Lucky knocks three minutes off her time between now and the middle of next month.”

Person (N.C.) High School also participated in the meet, but did not have enough runners to count a team score for either the boys or girls meet.

Team totals are based on the finishing position of the top five finishing runners for each team.

The Comets will return to action Wednesday when they face Bluestone High School here at 5 p.m. at Edmunds Park.
