The Halifax County Middle School golf team ran its win streak to five in a row Tuesday, defeating Powhatan Middle School 185-193 at Mayo Quarter Country Club in Powhatan. Tuesday’s Southside Middle School Conference contest was a tough one, with the Lions securing the win when Leggett Moore, playing in one of the last groups to finish the nine-hole tournament, came in with a round of 42.
“This team may be one of the better teams we’ve had here, simply because of its overall ability to pull things out of the fire,” noted Lions Coach Charlie Payne.
“This win puts us in great shape in terms of the conference championship.”
Along with Moore’s round of 42, the Lions were able to count a round of 47 from Alec Mitchell and rounds of 48 from both Matt Ratliff and Jamey Binner toward the team total.
Other players that took part in the match, but whose scores did not count towards the team total included Kaleb Cole (50), Lance Chappell (52), Luke Newbill (57) and Holt Powell (57).
While Tuesday’s win did a lot for the Lions in terms of its bid to win the Southside Middle School Conference championship, it also did a lot for the players in terms of confidence.
This season’s Southside Middle School Conference Championship Tournament will be played on the same course the Lions played on Tuesday. The experience of being successful on that course should help instill confidence among the players when they return to Powhatan on Sept. 27 for the conference championship tournament.
Halifax County Middle School’s next match is set for Tuesday when it will go on the road to face Amelia in a Southside Middle School Conference matchup.
