A two-day battle for the Green’s Folly Golf Course Ladies’ championship ended Sunday with Kay Burton edging Suzanne Stevens by one stroke to win the title. Both golfers carded an opening day score of 80, and Burton shot 81 on the second day, compared to an 82 for Stevens.
Norma Chaney and Paigie Allnutt each shot a 93-88-181 in the First Flight, with Chaney awarded first-place after a match of cards, and Jeanette Jones won the Second Flight with a 100-100-200, two strokes ahead of Connie Pate (102-100-202).
Burton and Stevens admitted the club championship came down to execution in the short game.
“We went back and forth all day long, she was ahead, I caught up, and she went ahead again,” said Stevens.
“I hit the ball really well, but I need to work on my short game, and that comes with practice,” added Stevens, a former Halifax County High School standout, who was playing in her first club championships in several years.
“Suzanne worked me hard today, both of us hit the ball good, and it came down to our putting and our chipping,” said Burton.
“It was a battle,” Burton noted. “She’s an excellent golfer, and she’s a lot younger than me.
“She hits the ball a ton. I was just lucky to win today, but she’s going to win some championships.”
Burton’s goal is to win both the Green’s Folly and Halifax Country Club titles in the same year.
“I’ve done it once before and I’d like to do it again,” Burton said.
