Rookie racer Drew Duffey of Halifax is making a big impression in his first year of go-kart racing, having two wins, three second-place finishes and two third-place finishes thus far in races at Amelia Speedway and ACE Speedway. The 6-year-old driver races in the Kid Kart Division, and he has become a fan favorite at both tracks, according to his dad, Ronnie.
“A lot people come by and give him high-fives,” he commented.
Drew has wanted to race since he was 3-years-old, soon after riding go-karts at the beach, according to his father.
“Even though he is much heavier than most of his competitors, he is able to be competitive by the way he drives his kart,” said the elder Duffey.
“He doesn’t mind going into turns wide open after passing other karts.”
“I like the speed, I like the passing, and I have a very fast go-kart,” said Drew Duffey, whose favorite track is ACE Speedway, which has both heat races and feature races.
Races last about 15 laps, said Ronnie Duffey, who added his son would race one more year in Kid Karts before moving up to Rookie Class racing.
“I’ve told him winning isn’t the most important thing, the most important thing is getting out there and having a good time,” he said.
Drew, who also plays baseball and soccer, said his ambition is to test his skill behind the wheel of a racecar eventually.
