The Halifax American Dixie Debs all-stars have won their first two games in the Dixie Debs World Series in Alexandria, Louisiana, the second win a tense 3-2 win over North Carolina in 10 innings on Sunday. Halifax American opened with a 9-5 win Saturday over Louisiana, and with the two wins earned a bye into a 8 p.m. game Monday against either South Carolina or the host team, Alexandria, Louisiana.
Halifax American 3 North Carolina 2 (10 innings)
Halifax American pulled out a 10-inning win over North Carolina in a game played in 100-degree heat and heat indexes approaching 107 degrees.
Halifax fell behind 1-0 after one inning before taking a 2-1 lead in the third, when Cori Campbell singled, Jessica Velazquez reached on an error and both scored on squeeze plays that included an RBI single by VeVe Brandon and a sacrifice bunt by Kate Bane.
North Carolina tied the game 2-2 in the bottom of the third on a single and two Halifax errors, and the game went into the 10th inning, where Jennifer Lacks reached on an error and scored on a RBI single by Lindsey Wilkins.
Halifax preserved the win with good defense after North Carolina’s leadoff hitter reached base and the next batter was out on a fly ball to right, with Dalyn Hall throwing the base runner out for a double play. The next batter tripled but a groundout gave Halifax the win.
Wilkins pitched the first eight innings for Halifax and struck out seven batters, while Bane pitched the final two innings in relief.
Halifax American 9 Louisiana 4
American scored a run in the second inning, two in the third, four in the fourth, and single runs in the fifth and sixth innings to beat Louisiana.
In the second, Hall singled and Brittany Long picked up an RBI bunt single, and in the third inning Bane walked, Sydney Puryear doubled and Jill Trickey reached on an error, with Bane and Puryear scoring.
In the fourth inning, Hall doubled, Long singled and Campbell and Christian Martin put together hits, Brandon reached on an error and Puryear got an RBI on a bases loaded walk.
Hall, Long, Campbell and Martin scored in the inning.
Lacks and Wilkins singled in the fifth inning, with Lacks scoring, and Martin singled and scored in the sixth inning when Puryear reached base on an error.
Louisiana scored one run in the third inning and three in the fourth frame.
Wilkins pitched two innings in the opener, Hall pitched three innings and Bane two innings, with Wilkins and Bane each striking out a batter.
