In a marathon effort that consumed almost a week of baseball, the Halifax County Dixie Boys all-stars emerged with the Dixie Boys State Title on Friday with a 9-2 win over New River Valley.
Grey Henderson pitched three and two-thirds innings and Thomas Cole pitched three and one-third innings in the win, Henderson allowing two runs on four hits, and Cole allowing no runs on no hits while striking out eight batters.
Halifax scored six runs on three hits, two walks and on error in the first to lead 6-1, Cole with an RBI double, Dustin Fears with an RBI single and Tripp Bennett with an RBI on an error.
Drew Link singled and scored in the first, and Adrian Moran and Ethan Woltz drew walks and scored for Halifax.
Moran doubled and scored on Cole’s RBI double in the second, and Halifax added a run in the third on a leadoff home run by Woltz to make it 8-1.
Moran singled, stole second and scored on Bennett’s RBI double in the sixth inning for Halifax’s final tally.
Ben Major added a base hit for Halifax County, that coming in the third inning after Woltz’s homer.

Bennett pitched a six-inning gem, allowing one run on six hits while striking out 10 batters in the win.
Bennett got out of a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the second with three straight strikeouts, and Halifax banged out nine hits in the win, scoring two runs in the first off a walk to Bennett and a two-run homer by Cole.
Cole singled in the third, but Halifax scored five runs off four hits in the fourth, beginning with a triple by Chandler Giacherio and RBI single by Link. Bennett hit a sacrifice bunt, Fears singled and Moran and Major drew walks, with Cole, Fears and Moran all scoring on passed balls.
Link was hit by a pitch in the fifth inning and scored after doubles by Bennett and Cole to make it 8-1, and Halifax tacked on four runs in the sixth inning when Major was hit by a pitch and scored after three passed balls.
Colby Grissom reached on an error, Giacherio after being hit by a pitch, and both scored on Bennett’s three-run homer.

New River Valley made it a best of three for the championship with a 12-9 win, scoring one run on three hits in the first inning, seven runs on four hits in the fourth, two in the fifth on two hits and two in the sixth on three hits.
Link doubled and Bennett walked in the first, both scoring on RBIs by Cole and Fears, and Giacherio doubled and scored in the second when Bennett reached on an error for an RBI before a Cole base hit.
Woltz tripled and stole home in the third inning, and Bennett tripled and Cole reached base after being hit by a pitch in the fifth, Bennett scoring on a passed ball and Cole on a RBI sacrifice fly by Fears.
Woltz walked and advanced on two passed balls before scoring on Henderson’s RBI single in the sixth inning, and Bennett walked and scored when Moran (RBI) reached base on an error in the seventh, with Woltz hitting a double in the inning.
Major pitched three innings, Grissom two-thirds of an inning and Henderson two and a third innings for Halifax, with the threesome combining for four strikeouts.
