Boys off to 4-1 start in tourney

The Halifax County Dixie Boys all-stars are off to a 4-1 start in the Dixie Boys State Tournament in Christiansburg, beating Buckingham County 21-2 in its opener last Sunday and Powhatan 21-4 the following day. Halifax County lost 10-8 to Grayson County on Tuesday and stayed alive with a 9-2 win over Bedford Metro later that same day.
Halifax County got a measure of payback by beating Grayson County 3-1 on Thursday morning.

Drew Link had two hits and Thomas Cole and Ben Major a hit apiece for Halifax County, which scored twice in the first inning off a Link base hit, passed ball and Link’s steal of third before a RBI triple by Cole.

Cole scored on Tripp Bennett’s fielder’s choice, and Link singled in the fifth, stole second and moved to third on Cole’s fielder’s choice before scoring on a passed ball.

Bennett pitched two and two-thirds innings, striking out two and giving up two hits, and Cole went four and one-third innings, striking out two and giving up two hits.

Grayson scored its only run in the fourth inning.

Dustin Fears had two hits, including a home run, and Link, Cole, Bennett, Major and Colby Grissom added hits for Halifax.

Link doubled, stole second and scored on Adrian Moran’s sacrifice, and Cole reached base and scored on Fears’ homer in the first, and Bennett singled and scored on a RBI double by Fears in the third inning.

Majors reached base, stole second and scored on Grissom’s double in the fourth, and Cole reached base, stole second and scored on Bennett’s single in the fifth, before Bennett scored on a fielder’s choice by Ethan Woltz.

Moran walked and scored on Cole’s triple in the sixth in support of a complete game by Major, who struck out five and gave up four hits.

Grayson County 10 Halifax County 8

Halifax County finished with eight hits, Bennett with two and Link, Moran, Woltz, Major, Grey Henderson and Chandler Giacherio wit a hit apiece.

Link reached base in the first, stole second and scored on Bennett’s double, and Giacherio walked in the third before Link reached base, with both scoring on a Bennett double.  Bennett stole third base and home.

Major reached base in the fourth and Henderson doubled, before Major scored on a RBI single by Giacherio and a two-run single by Link, and Fears and Woltz walked in the fifth, Major bunted for a single and Fears scored on a passed ball.

Grayson scored three runs in the second inning and seven runs in the third.

Grissom gave up two hits and struck out one batter in one and one-third innings, Bennett gave up one hit in one and two-thirds innings, and Henderson gave up two hits and struck out one in four innings on the mound.

Halifax County 23 Powhatan 4

Halifax County had 14 hits against Powhatan, Link (triple, double) finishing with four hits, Moran (triple), Cole (two home run) and Woltz with two hits apiece, and Bennett (triple), Major, Grissom and Giacherio with a hit apiece.  Frankie Wilkerson had a sacrifice fly.

Halifax scored three runs in the first inning, one in the second, 16 in the third and three in the fourth inning, with Cole and Moran each collecting four RBIs, Bennett two and Major and Giacherio one apiece.

Link scored on an error and passed ball, Major scored three times on passed balls, Bennett once on a passed ball, Henderson on a steal of home and two balks, and Woltz after a steal of home.

Link pitched one and one-third innings and gave up four hits, Grissom pitched one and one-thirds innings and gave up one hit while striking out three, and Bennett pitched two innings, striking out one and giving up one hit.

Halifax County 21 Buckingham County 2

Halifax County had 17 hits against Buckingham County, Link (triple), Woltz (double, triple) Major (two doubles) and Fears (double) each with three hits, Moran (two doubles) and Bennett (double, triple) with two hits apiece, and Cole (double) with one hit.

Halifax County scored three runs in the first, 10 in the second, two in the third, four in the fourth and two runs in the fifth inning, while Buckingham scored twice in the fourth on a single, RBI hits and sacrifice fly.

Woltz and Moran each had four RBIs, Bennett, Fears and Major two RBIs apiece, and Cole one RBI, while Link stole home and scored on a passed ball, Henderson on a balk, Major on a passed ball and Fears and Grissom on errors.

Henderson pitched three and two-thirds innings, striking out three and giving up five hits, Fears pitched one-third inning and gave up two hits, and Link pitched one inning, striking out three batters.
