South Boston’s C.H. Friend Field will be a busy place for the next several days as the Virginia Dixie Majors state baseball tournament gets under way today. Nine teams will be competing for the state title in the double elimination tournament that opens today with four teams.
Smyth County will face Amelia in today’s opener at 10 a.m. with Goochland facing Roanoke City in the second game, which starts at 1 p.m. Mecklenburg County and Cumberland will square off at 4 p.m. and host South Boston will face Carroll County in the final game at 7 p.m.
Four more games are scheduled for Saturday with Buckingham, which got an opening-day bye, facing the winner of today’s Goochland-Roanoke City game opening the action at 10 a.m. Saturday.
The sixth game of the tournament will be played at 1 p.m. with the losers of Friday’s first two games facing each other in an elimination game. On Saturday at 4 p.m. the losers of the Mecklenburg County-Cumberland game and the South Boston-Carroll County game will square off at 4 p.m. Saturday’s 7 p.m. nightcap will involve the winners of the Mecklenburg County-Cumberland game and the South Boston-Carroll County game.
After the first two days of play, the tournament will shift to three games on Sunday and a pair of games on Monday and Tuesday. The tournament is scheduled to conclude on Wednesday.
South Boston enters today’s tournament as the defending state champion. When South Boston won the state tournament last year, it was South Boston’s first state championship in six years.
