South Boston rallies in Dixie Youth Baseball AAA

After seeing an eight-run lead vanish, the South Boston Dixie Youth Baseball AAA (Minor League) all-stars trailed Halifax by two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning Saturday in the District 2 West Sub-District Tournament in Halifax.

Two swings of the bat with two outs, one by Dillon Davis and another by J.D. Powell, gave South Boston the runs it needed to edge Halifax 12-10 in the sub district opener.

With only three teams in this year’s sub-district tournament, South Boston faced Scottsburg last night in game two of the double elimination tourney.

Davis finished with two hits, including a single in South Boston’s first at-bat where it took a 1-0 lead, while Corey Moore added a base hit, a single coming in a seven-run third frame where seven walks helped give South Boston an 8-0 advantage.

Halifax had a base runner thrown out at the plate in the first inning, and it happened twice more in the third inning, but it rallied with eight runs in the fourth and two in the fifth inning to take the lead.

In the fourth, doubles by Seth Dawson and Zach Lowery (two RBIs), a single by Allen Fallen and seven walks helped tie the game for Halifax.

In the fifth, Damien Hall and Daniel Lacks reached base on errors and Lowery singled, with walks to Seth Dawson and Josh Dawson giving Halifax a 10-8 lead.

Walks to Lance Chappell, Christian Palmer and Kameron Clark loaded the bases for South Boston with two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning, before a two-run hit by Davis tied the score, and a ground ball by Powell gave South Boston the game-winning runs.

Halifax had one last chance in the top of the sixth after walks to Dexter Dixon and Ali Ferrell and a single by Fallen loaded the bases with two outs, but a strikeout ended the game.

Halifax finished with 10 hits, including a double and two singles from Lowery, three hits from Fallen, doubles from Seth Dawson and Ali Ferrell, and base hits from Darius Younger and Jamar Traynham.

Each team used a combination of pitchers in the game.  Powell started for South Boston, with Dillon Davis, Brandon Davis and Devyn Moran seeing time on the mound.

Seth Dawson was first on the mound for Halifax, with Jared Dawson and Zack Lowery also toeing the rubber.

Halifax pitching fanned 10 South Boston batters, while South Boston pitching struck out nine Halifax batters.
