Tourney trio begins Friday in Halifax

A new series of baseball and softball tournaments involving area all-star teams kicks off today, with one tournament being played in Halifax. The Dixie Youth Baseball District 2 AAA League (formerly known as the Minor League) West Sub-District Tournament opens tonight at 7 p.m. in Halifax with South Boston facing host Halifax.

With only three teams in the double-elimination tournament, there will be one game per night. On Saturday night, South Boston will face Scottsburg at 6:30 p.m. Then, on Sunday night, Scottsburg will face Halifax at 6:30 p.m.

If all three teams have one loss after Sunday’s game, a drawing will be held to determine which team will get a bye into the championship game and which two teams will play in Monday night’s game.

The tournament championship could be determined on Monday night. If an extra game is needed, it will be played on Tuesday night.

Halifax County South won last year’s sub-district tournament and went on to defeat South Hill in a best-of-three-game playoff series to win the District 2 title. There will be a different winner this year, however, as Halifax County South dropped out of Dixie Youth Baseball to move to Cal Ripken Baseball.

Halifax won the sub-district tournament in 2009 and was the runner-up last year.

Also today, the South Boston Dixie Pre-Majors all-star team, an entry from District 4, will begin play in the Virginia Dixie Pre-Majors State Tournament in Goochland.

South Boston will face Bedford County at 1 p.m. in today’s opening game. If South Boston wins, it will play Saturday at 7 p.m. in a winner’s bracket game. Should South Boston lose today, it will play in an elimination game at 4 p.m. Saturday
One of the area’s softball teams, the District 7 tournament champion Halifax County American Angels, opens play today at 4 p.m. in the Virginia Dixie Angels State Tournament in Amherst. Halifax County is scheduled to face Goochland in its first game.

If Halifax County wins it will play Carroll County Saturday at 3 p.m. In the event of a loss, it will play in an elimination game at 6 p.m. Saturday.
