American rallies for Angels District title

It took only one big inning for the Halifax American Angels all-stars to win the Dixie Softball District 7 championship Thursday night in Halifax, with American plating 10 runs on one hit and nine walks in the fourth inning to defeat Halifax National 10-6.

Savanna Cabaniss’ two-run base hit keyed the surge in the fourth inning, which saw Hailie Lawhorn, Tamiara Logan, Madison Gunn, Carol Fears, Olivia Noblin, Jeri Tyler, Mollie Slate, Veaundra Winn and Lauryn Chappell all draw walks, with all but Chappell scoring after a forceout at the plate.

Aliyah Chandler reached base on an error and also scored in the fourth to help erase a 4-0 lead for National.

National had taken a 1-0 in its first at-bat when Mackenzie Lawter singled, Katie Cole reached on a fielder’s choice, Sierra Nunn doubled and Rose Spainour hit an RBI groundout.

Casey Clayton and Sydney Wilborn drew walks in the first, but American got two force outs at home to hold National to a single run.

Amanda Coleman was stranded at third after a leadoff triple in the second, but National added three runs in the third to increase its lead, with Lawter hitting a leadoff single, Cole reaching on a fielder’s choice and Nunn hitting an RBI single.  Rose walked, Clayton reached on a fielder’s choice and Wilborn and Jessica Auld walked in the inning to make it 4-0.

Held to only one base runner through three innings, that a leadoff walk to Hailie Lawhorn in the first frame, American scored 10 runs in the fourth and held on for the win, despite a last-inning rally by National, which scored twice in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Lawter reached base after being hit by a pitch, Cole doubled, Nunn reached on an error and Spainhour hti an RBI groundout.

Clayton, Wilborn and Auld drew walks, Auld’s a bases-loaded walk for an RBI as National cut the deficit to 10-6, but a strikeout by Carol Fears ended the game.

Fears, Lawhorn and Tyler pitched for American in the game, combining for seven strikeouts, while National also used three pitchers, Lawter, Nunn and Cole, who combined for nine strikeouts.

Halifax American will represent District 7 at the Virginia Dixie Softball State Tournament July 8 in Amherst.
