With a one-run lead over Brookneal entering the fifth and final inning, things looked promising for the Halifax American Darlings all-stars in their efforts to extend the Dixie Softball District 7 Tournament to a deciding game. Things didn’t work out as American had wished, however as Brookneal capped an unbeaten run through the tournament with a 12-11 win Wednesday, scoring two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.
American used a last-inning rally to eliminate Halifax National the day before, and struck for two runs in its first at-bat against Brookneal, with a single from Kendall Foushee, double from Dee Dee Jeffress and single from Trinity Martin.
It was 3-2 in favor of American after two innings, with Kayla Townes and Abby Casen getting base hits in the inning, and American outscored Brookneal 3-2 in the third inning to lead 6-4, with Foushee and Jeffress getting base hits in that frame.
American had a productive fourth inning with five runs, but Brookneal added six to cut its deficit to a single run heading into the final inning,
Townes slugged a double to lead off the fourth inning for American, which got base hits from Casen, Amaya Mitchell, Raegan Ridgeway and Foushee in the frame.
American went down in order the top of the fifth inning, and Brookneal responded by scoring twice in its last at-bat to win the district 7 title.
Foushee and Ridgeway were on the mound for American against Brookneal.
