Belles cruise in district opener

The Halifax American Belles all-stars were almost perfect in the Dixie Softball District 7 opener Saturday against Charlotte County. Pitchers Meg Bane, Courtney Epps and Taylor Barnes hurled a combined no-hitter, coming within one walk of a perfect game, and Halifax banged out 19 hits in a 16-0 win in five innings.

The same two teams met last night with Halifax needing only one more win to clinch the district title.

Kelsy Williams had three hits for Halifax, including a triple, while Tayler Mosley, Emily Nester and Meg Bane each finished with three hits against Charlotte County, each with a double.

Kye-Neisha Logan had a double and single, Megan Puckett had two base hits, Peyton Myers a double and Beth Thomas a base hit for Halifax, which scored in each inning, four runs in the first, one run in the second, six in the third, four in the fourth and one run in the fifth inning.

Williams finished with five RBIs, Bane and Myers with two apiece, and Nester, Thomas, Logan and Epps with one RBI each in the win.

Bane had one strikeout in two innings, Epps four in two innings and Barnes three in the fifth inning, with only one walk issued.
