Halifax teams advance in Angels tournament

Both the Halifax National and Halifax American Angels all-star teams advanced after wins Saturday in the Dixie Softball District 7 Tournament in Halifax. Halifax National scored a run in the second and a run in the third to back a one-hit shutout by pitchers Sierra Nunn, Mackenzie Lawter and Katie Cole in a 2-0 win over Brookneal, and Halifax American pounded out 10 hits, including home runs by Aliyah Chandler and Tamiara Logan in a 14-1 rout of Charlotte County.

National had five hits in the close win over Brookneal, with Sierra Nunn and Rose Spainhour getting hits in the first inning.

Casey Clayton and Sydney Wilborn both walked in the second inning, with Clayton scoring on a Kyra Scott base hit.  Kenna Moser singled and scored in the third after a walk to Mackenzie Lawter and singles by Sierra Nunn and Rose Spainhour.

Brookneal had one hit and left the bases loaded in the fourth inning after two walks and a hit batsman, with Katie Cole getting a strikeout to end the threat.

Nunn struck out six Brookneal batters in two innings, the first and the fifth, while Lawter pitched the second and third innings, striking out four batters.  Cole pitched the fourth inning and finished with three strikeouts.

Halifax American 14 Charlotte County 1

American scored two runs in the first inning, one in the second, six in the third and four in the fourth inning to rout Charlotte County.

Aliyah Chandler finished with a home run, triple and base hit in the win, and Tamiara Logan added a home run and a base hit.  Savanna Cabaniss had two base hits, and Madison Gunn, Mollie Slate, Jeri Lynn Tyler and Veaundra Winn had a base hit apiece for American.

Charlotte County scored its lone run in the fourth inning on a walk, single, walk and hit batsman, but American pitchers Carol Fears, Logan, Gunn and Hailie Lawhorn  held Charlotte County to only one hit with a combined eight strikeouts.
