Comets diamonders earn honors

Eight players on this season’s Western Valley District Champion Halifax County High School varsity baseball team have earned postseason honors. Two of them, senior Tyler Long and junior William Worley, have been named to the First Team of the All-Northwest Region Team. The pair, both of whom earned accolades as outfielders, were the only two Comets players to be named to the All-Northwest Region Team.

Long had a .383 batting average with 12 RBIs while Worley had a .522 batting average with 18 RBIs and two home runs.
As a result of being named to the First Team of the All-Northwest Region Team, Long and Worley are eligible candidates for the Group AAA All-State Team.

Along with earning top regional honors, Long and Worley were also named to the First Team of the All-Western Valley District Team, with Long earning First Team all-district honors as both a pitcher and outfielder.

On the mound, Long was 4-0 on the season in district play with an earned run average of 1.79. He logged 43 strikeouts and allowed 14 walks.

Also earning First Team all-district honors were junior first baseman Dylan Sons and senior shortstop Zach Clem.

Clem compiled a .412 batting average with 12 RBIs. Sons batted .425 with five RBIs.

Four other Comets players, senior second baseman Kelvin Davis Jr., junior outfielder Ryan Puryear, junior catcher Dylan Hendricks and junior designated hitter Joe Martin were named to the Second Team of the All-Western Valley District Team.

Halifax County High School had the largest number of players to earn First Team honors in the all-district selections with its four players being picked.

Halifax County High School’s Long and Worley were two of only four players from the Western Valley District to earn All-Northwest Region honors.

Metz from Franklin County High School, who was named as a utility player, was named to the First Team of the All-Northwest Region Team

GW freshman hurler Blake Bivens, who also served as a designated hitter, was named to the Second Team of the All-Northwest Region Team as a designated hitter.
