Travis Lipscomb and Terence Boyd of the Comets’ indoor track team capped outstanding seasons with top-10 finishes at the Virginia Group AAA boys state indoor track and field meet, held Friday and Saturday at the Boo Williams Sportsplex in Hampton. Lipscomb was sixth in the triple jump at 44-11.50 and Boyd was eighth in the long jump at 21-10.50 at the state meet to give Halifax County four points and a 36th-place finish out of 55 teams.
Boyd was 14th in the triple jump at 43-01.75 and 17th in the 300-meter dash in 36.74 seconds, while Lipscomb was 24th in the long jump at 20-03.00.
Mikayla Boyd represented the Comets girls’ indoor track team at the state meet, finishing 26th in the triple jump at 33-07.50.
Atlee High School won the AAA state boys indoor track championship with 42 points, while Western Branch claimed the girls’ title with 82 points.
Terence Boyd and Lipscomb claimed regional titles at the Northwest Regional meet held recently.
Boyd had three state qualifying efforts in the long jump, triple jump and 300-meter dash, Lipscomb qualified in the long jump and triple jump, and Davon Greene qualified for the state meet in the high jump and triple jump.
Mikayla Boyd also qualified for the state meet at the Northwest Regionals, meeting the benchmark in both the triple jump (fifth-place) and 55-meter hurdles (sixth-place).
