Comets golfers finish second

The Halifax County High School golf team capped its regular-season district play Monday and earned a second-place finish in the Western Valley District standings in the process. Franklin County High School had all but formally secured the regular-season district title several weeks ago. But, when Monday’s final regular-season district tournament concluded at Roanoke Country Club, the Eagles were officially crowned the regular-season champion.

With the regular-season championship, the Eagles clinched one of the Western Valley District’s two team berths in the Northwest Region Tournament. The district’s second team berth will be determined in the Western Valley District Championship Golf Tournament to be held Tuesday, Sept. 28, at Westlake Country Club.

If Halifax County High School wins the district championship tournament or finishes second with a Franklin County High School victory, the Comets can earn the district’s second team berth in the Northwest Region Tournament.

Franklin County High School won Monday’s final regular-season district tournament with a round of 312, easily edging runner-up Halifax County High School, which came in with a 333 total.

Halifax County edged tournament host Patrick Henry High School by one shot after encountering misfortune following the tournament.

The Comets’ top player, Cody Spencer, was disqualified after he signed for the wrong score on his scorecard. Spencer signed his scorecard for a round of 74, but when his score was reviewed, he actually had carded a round of 75.

That unfortunate set of circumstances made Dillon Puryear the leader among the Comets with his round of 79. Other scores that counted for the Comets included a round of 80 from Joey Gasperini, a round of 85 from T.J. Daniels and a round of 89 from Tyler Holt.

Josh Irby also played for the Comets. He turned in a round of 92, which did not count toward to the team total.

Franklin County High School’s Asher Walker earned medalist honors with his round of 76. His round was one of four rounds in the 70’s that counted for Franklin County High School.
