Cody Spencer led the Halifax County High School golf team’s effort with his round of 79 in Monday’s season-opening Heritage Invitational Golf Tournament at London Downs Country Club. The Comets finished with a team total of 341.
Comets head coach David Graham said his team finished at around 15th place in the tournament.
“As a team, we finished much better than we did last year,” Graham said.
“We had two good scores. This tournament is a good way to start the season. We saw some things that we need to work on. It was a good learning experience.”
T.J. Daniel followed Spencer with his round of 81. Parker Harrell’s round of 86 and the round of 94 posted by sophomore Tyler Holt who was playing his first varsity golf match, were the other scores that counted towards the Comets’ team total.
Kaitlin Fallen also played. She carded a round of 103.
Cave Spring High School won the 24-team tournament with a team total of 313. George McDaniel of Jefferson Forest High School earned medalist honors and turned in the day’s only round under 70 with his 69.
Jefferson Forest High School, Hidden Valley High School of Roanoke and Western Valley District member Franklin County High School tied for second place with a team total of 317.
Rustburg High School, Salem High School and Mills Godwin High School finished in a three-way tie for fifth place with a team total of 319.
The Comets will be back in action here Thursday when they square off against former Western Valley District member E.C. Glass High School at Greens Folly Golf Course.
The 18-hole match will start at 12:30 p.m. with both teams playing their top 10 players.
“That will be a good practice match for us,” Graham said.
“That will help us get ready for the first Western Valley District tournament, which will be played next Tuesday.”
