Dixie Boys Win 2-1 Thriller In Last Inning

Elijah Hudson executed a suicide squeeze bunt to score Tyler Wall from third base with the game-winning run in the top of the seventh inning to give the Halifax County Dixie Boys all-stars a 2-1 win over Troup County, Ga., in the Dixie Boys World Series in Christiansburg, Va. With the game tied at 1-1, Wall and Hunter Watts had consecutive base hits, and Nick Lewis hit into a fielder’s choice to put runners at first and third with one out.

Then with the count two strikes and two balls, Hudson executed a suicide squeeze bunt to score Wall from third base to make it 2-1, and Georgia was retired in order the bottom of the seventh to end the game.

Halifax County got out of a two-on, no-out situation in the first inning, when a double and third-strike passed ball put Georgia runners at second and third with no outs.

A Georgia base runner was thrown out at the plate on a fielder’s choice and two Seth Elliott strikeouts got Halifax out of the inning.

Georgia took a 1-0 lead in the third on a double, single and fielder’s choice, and Halifax County failed to answer in the fifth inning, after Justin Womack reached base on an error, Michael Watts singled and Nick Lewis reached on an error to load the bases with two outs.

A strikeout got Georgia out of that jam, but Halifax County tied the game in the top of the sixth when Elliott walked and went to second on a passed ball, scoring on a Womack RBI single to make it 1-1.

That set up the top of the seventh inning where Halifax County won the game.

Elliott pitched a strong six and one-thirds innings for Halifax County, allowing one run on five hits while striking out nine batters and walking one.

Ryan Powell relieved for the final two batters, getting a flyout and strikeout to end the game.

Halifax County played last night in an effort to go 2-0 in the World Series.
